The military goes hand-in-hand with institutionalized racism and sexism. We were told all of these beautiful benefits and were not made aware of everything else we would put on the line. They target students who spoke on their families struggles. They use their traumas!
When I tell y'all recruiters were up student's asses, consistently poking at students until they were made to feel vulnerable enough to sign their lives away, after glorifying their traumas and "manifesting" their futures.
We became friends with these recruiters. Enough to feel comfortable for them to text us, to constantly remind us that there weren't many chances of escaping poverty. Enough to where we felt we could not disappoint them. They knew us, they knew our past, they recognized us.
y'all think these high schools know what they are getting themselves into? NO, they're not telling these kids the FULL truth. Young, excited, feeling wanted, that feeling of bravery to fight to protect a country that (they don't even know) aren't doing the same to protect them.
and when I say protect, I mean “protect”. Now that’s a whole other conversation on coercion to kill.
My sister has been vulnerable enough to share her sexual harassment experiences in the military with me. So many stories like these. She even talks about how the benefits were exaggerated. No one warned this young Latina about the ways they would treat her in these spaces.
Chavez High School had all branches of the military runnin up and down those hallways giving students this "dream" to destroy generational poverty, whether or not they were involved in JROTC! Individually targeting students who had insecurities about their families/ future
