So we’re talking about Wentworth, which means I’m gonna be on my intimacy director bullshit again.
Folks, there is absolutely NO EXCUSE, *EVER*, for an actor to feel that unsafe or out of control. Ever. That Sam has to go get wasted and spend a few days out hiking or whatever 1/
To process ISN’T good.
How that scene SHOULD HAVE GONE...
1. Establishment of boundaries w/ Tobias & Sam
2. Conversation with director, actors, and intimacy director/coordinator about the needs of the scene in non sexual language.
3. Clothed staging and rehearsal /2
4. Regular check ins during rehearsal - intimacy direction has completely standard phrase for asking to pause during an intense scene to get clarification/step out of the moment/etc.
5. Mental health resources made available for actors in that intense scene /3
6. Clearly stated expectations during filming (duh).
7. A process of de-roleing (that is, helping the actor step away from the roll by articulating differences in what the character is doing and what they’re doing) EVERY. TIME. the shooting stops.
Etc. /4
That’s the process I’m trained in, anyway, and there are other viable techniques. The idea, though, is that there must be open lines of communication AT ALL TIMES and care MUST be taken to help the actors separate themselves from their roles (I promise, you actually /5
... get BETTER performances when actors aren’t feeling abused/terrified/etc, even if their characters are, and its a bullshit and dangerous misconception to try otherwise). I might also say, if I’m feeling extra spicy, that intimacy coordination on happy sex scenes provides /6
EMOTIONAL safety, which is also super important, even if there is less likelihood of emotional/psychological danger.
So yeah, @STARZ and in particular @Outlander_STARZ need to follow HBO’s lead and hire intimacy coordinators, and apologize to @SamHeughan. And that’s that on that.
