First time at #IfGDataBites and wondering what's going on?
The idea of these events is to bring together data communities from across government, show others what data can achieve, and put projects on the record.
4 presentations of 8 mins each, followed by 8 mins of qs apiece

And we're live!
Your host for this evening is the illustrious @GavinFreeguard who will take us through the dos and don'ts of this event, as well as a rundown of the past month in the world of data and government (check out this nifty @instituteforgov chart on FoI releases)

First up is @profadmorris from @HDR_UK on health data science in the coronavirus era, and options and opportunities for the UK in the future
#IfGDataBites
#IfGDataBites
@HDR_UK's mission is to unite the UK's health data to enable discoveries that improve people's lives.
Uniting health data, using health data, and improving it. All with good governance - what could be better?
Uniting health data, using health data, and improving it. All with good governance - what could be better?
COVID-19 has required @HDR_UK to re-pivot, co-ordinating and connecting data driven research, accelerate access to UK-wide priority health data, to help address urgent questions for policy-makers, system leaders and patients. #IfGDataBites
Working with SAGE, health research questions have been prioritised and the 'fittest' questions have been accelerated. This has helped to reveal many important discoveries such as the loss of taste and smell being a symptom of COVID-19. #IfGDataBites
A strong data infrastructure has been vital for the research environment nurtured by @HDR_UK. All data sets and tools are available publicly on http://healthdatagateway.org 450 data sets available! #IfGDataBites
@HDR_UK is working internationally to join up health data from across the world, enabling people to act locally but think globally. #IfGDataBites
Now for some questions!
Q: Should NHS medical records be shared with DWP?
A: Any sharing of data should pass public interest tests. Panels of the public should be used to help make sensible judgments about the security and trustworthiness of data sharing.

Q: Has anything useful arisen from armchair epidemiologists?
A: Data use needs to be enhanced, and the more everyone is involved, the better. Anyone with a good idea should be encouraged to ask questions and build communities.

#IfGDataBites
Q: How have @HDR_UK been approaching BAME data?
A: We need to improve our datasets and their definitions of BAME individuals. The data deficit in this area needs to be addressed

Q: What data do we have about care homes? Are the gov interested?
A: SAGE has a sub-group working on care home data. They should be very interested. Data is fragmented, and private partners should be working with the gov so that all data is joined up.

#IfGDataBites
Some technical issues with Kerina, so next up are @kirbyswales and Lan-Ho Man from @mhclg on the potential of linked admin data in social policy!
#IfGDataBites
#IfGDataBites
Admin data can be really useful in the social policy context, and @kirbyswales will be talking about how useful linked-up data has been in the context of the troubled families programme
This programme is a large one, run in England through local authorities, with the objective of improving services for families with multiple high-cost problems.
#IfGDataBites
#IfGDataBites
Linking up datasets (such as those relating to crime, education and safeguarding, and employment) enables local authorities to better provide support for families eligible for the troubled families programme.
#IfGDataBites
#IfGDataBites
Linked-admin data helps with research and evaluation work, providing info on population sub-groups and cycles of social issues. Better use of data also allows better measurement of programme effectiveness.
#IfGDataBites
#IfGDataBites
Linked admin-data helps with improvements of the service itself, enabling local areas to improve commissioning, decision making and get a broader background on vulnerable families who need support.
#IfGDataBites
#IfGDataBites
Linked data sets has also brought about better tracking of objectives in the troubled family service, and has been used to inform policy and investment decisions for the future provision of the service. The more datasets are linked, the better.
#IfGDataBites
#IfGDataBites
Now for some qs!
Q: What can be done to help devolve data to local authorities?
A: @mhclg are working to improve the linked-up nature of UC data to share as widely as possible and help families needing support from local authorities

#IfGDataBites
Q: What data maturity model was used to judge the maturity of local authorities?
A: MHCLG created their own, based on self-assessment! If there is one in existence, let them know...

#IfGDataBites
Q: When will MHCLG data become publicly available?
A: Not publicly available at the mo. Time lags in the data means it takes a while for things to catch up. Investment in admin data infrastructure needs to continue increasing!

Q: How does Wales compare in terms of data maturity?
A: Not sure in terms of family support services, but @kirbyswales will be following up on this!

#IfGDataBites
Next up at #IfGDataBites are @BetsyTwicks and Amy Summerfield from MoJ to talk about the pioneering data linking project 'Data First', funded by our sponsors for this evening @adr_uk
Data First aims to unlock and enable the wealth of data produced by MoJ, de-identified of course. This is used to inform academic research as well as improve the justice MoJ provides
#IfGDataBites
#IfGDataBites
Data First working to join-up data sets from MoJ in order to provide evidence which can underpin the development of more effective govt policies, and drive real progress in tackling social and justice problems
#IfGDataBites
#IfGDataBites
Data First using data to track individuals across the system and support them get better results and improve their lives. Linking up with other govt data sets helps gain a broader picture of people's lives and help them in the most effective way possible
#IfGDataBites
#IfGDataBites
Benefits from Data First are wide ranging. From enhancing research to aiding better justice provision #IfGDataBites
'MoJ is data rich but individual operational datasets are fragmented'. Data First is working to rectify this by linking everything up!
