'bout to go on a rant here so mute me if you don't want spoilers about #Bulbbul
Firstly this poster really intrigued me. The red moon is dazzling, but the supposed "Chudail" is not really threatening. It's like she's dancing atop trees. Innocent, just playing, not upto any evil.
The story was predictable, but the best part were the characters. It's like the writer had these people in their head but didn't exactly know what to do with them. Like the story didn't do justice to the cast.
Character analysis:
Bulbbul- the baby was cute! And I was scared for her. The younger girl was so innocent and single-mindedly devoted to her best friend/crush it was endearing. And then the Thakurain was like a while different person. Tripti Dimitri was subtle yet phenomenal.
My heart hurt for her, I cried and smiled with her. Was proud of her, laughed at her one liners. She was a well rounded character. Scared but brave too vulnerable and hurt but then strong and decisive. A rose bud and the thorns on the stem.
Now we move on to the heralds of patriarchy.
The twins: fuckers who should rot in hell.
The younger one called Bulbbul Gudiya when he first met her. Now that in itself can be a term of endearment, for someone young enough to be one's daughter. If that doesn't show how fucked up-
The marriage was,the scene of a little girl sitting on a bed dressed as a bride would. Plu Guddiya? I've never understand why it's cute or acceptable to call anyone that. Well these men go ahead and also treat her as one. Her husband treats her as child will treat a precious toy.
A jealous child. Until someone else touches it and they don't want it anymore. Breaks the doll and throws it away. The doll he wouldn't share with anyone is now broken and no good for him.
When kids leave the house and go somewhere they're not allowed to some parents(with massive anger management issues) often threaten to break their legs. Empty threats but. And here he Literally breaks her legs. No questions, no explanation, no considerate no kindness.
Satya- I thought he was supposed to be the love interest. But he was a disappointment more than any other character because she trusted him. And he too treated her like a doll. He was jealous and unjust in his accusations. Assumed things and put his judgement over anyone else's.
So condescending while talking to her. Addressing her like she's a child. So fucking ignorant. Satya is the epitome of young, educated, modern, urbane and apparently liberal men who think they are respecting and caring for women but don't know shit.
He, like his brother, had a role for her. When she did not fit into that role/mould anymore, had grown beyond it. Grown up to be a independent woman instead of the naive girl who followed him around and had eyes only for him, he too discarded her. Liek an old, broken toy.
The Didi- it's not just ken who run patriarchy and propagate mysogyny. She was the elder in the house. She should've protected, guided, comforted, advised Bulbbul. But she conspired, envied and triggered her misery. She made the girl suffer because she was suffering herself.
The Doctor- To all who cry about it's not "all men". Yeah no shit, it isn't. He was the one decent human being and out of all the male characters in tue movie (dead or alive) he was the only one who actually respected her agency as a woman. Loved her without any guile.
He was a good friend. I wish there were more people like him in the world.
And to all the loser asking "where was the horror???"

Of the Child bride on her "wedding night"; a girl crying she would have no one to talk to after her only friend leaves; and the scenes of assault and rape did not look horrifying to you.

Fuck off.
These stories, these things will always be infinitely more "scary" than any prosthetic monster or screeching ghost and moving chairs. You know why? Because this shit is real. Women face this all over the world, everyday.
Now think and tell me that feminism is shit.
