i think people on stan twitter need to realise that some forms of activism are helpful and some aren’t. it makes absolutely zero sense to believe that you can last minute change a situation that petitions and hashtags have absolutely no agency over. if dictatorships, conflicts
Iike israel/palestine, world hunger, things that have been going on for decades could be saved by you spreading one more petition or getting mad at one more person for not doing enough, do you really think it would take world leaders and international organisations so long to
solve problems and obtain world peace? of course not. i don’t expect those of you who didn’t even know about palestine existing two days ago to understand how exhaustingly slow diplomacy is and how difficult it is to find solutions but i can assure you that it’s not as easy as
making a thread full of change dot orgs and feeling better. the world is a shit place and of course some efforts work better than others (we should always fight for good, freedom of speech etc if there is even a sliver of a chance of success) and this is by no means a tweet that
tells you to give up because “you’re not gonna change anything anyway”. i just want to encourage you to be smart about your activism. make it a long-term thing, a marathon without a finish line, don’t jump from one topic one day to another one the next. read books, watch movies,
keep up with the news and compare news outlets from different countries. don’t get mad at others for not doing “as much as they should”, draw conclusions too quickly or tell people to stop tweeting about things that make them happy. there’s so many ways to help causes permanently
through donations; boycott certain brands if you can. talk to your irls, keep this political interest. all of those things can make a difference and there’s no use in blaming people for not doing as much as you. we should foster an environment where everyone can have their own
personal path of activism, not streamline it by requiring all of our mutuals to do the exact same as us. most importantly, don’t let this stay a twitter thing only. i’d rather see people posting about things they love while doing most of their activism outside of this app than
the platform becoming the place you have to document all your actions in order to not be cancelled and having to be ashamed to have other interests. we need to be realistic.
that being said, and as mentioned above, we still should try our absolute best to help our mutuals, especially those who live in regions of crisis, out in whichever way we can: listen to them but don’t overwhelm them even more, ask questions when you need to if you can’t find
answers on google, don’t ignore their cries for help and tweets but let them know that they and their countries’ issues are valid. from what i’ve heard from people, stan twitter has always been a place that united people and i think it should stay this place of love and respect.
