Kashmir has a special status, under Article 370, which allows it to govern itself, allows Kashmiris to buy property, hold government jobs, win education scholarships. The rules largely safeguard the future of the majority-Muslim population who live there.
However,
Prime Minister Modi has revoked it on August 5, 2019. This is where the conflict has arisen. Kashmiris now fear this will lead to a demographic transformation of the region from majority Muslim to majority Hindu.
India then placed Kashmir on an indefinite lockdown. The Indian government deployed at least 10,000 extra troops to Kashmir, which was already one of the world’s most militarized regions.
India also ordered thousands of tourists to leave the region & shut off most communication with the area, including the internet, mobile phones & landline networks. The Indian military also stands accused of using pellet guns to suppress protests.
During this Lockdown;
Hundreds of thousands of Muslim women and girls in occupied Jammu and Kashmir are under serious threat because Modi’s Hindutva supremacist government continues using rape and molestation as a weapon of war in the occupied region.
The conflict-related sexual violence refers to rape, sexual slavery, forced prostitution, forced pregnancy, forced abortion, enforced sterilization, forced marriages perpetrated against women, men, girls or boys that are directly or indirectly linked to a conflict.
According to a fact-finding mission that spent five days in the occupied valley last year, around 13k boys were picked up from their homes in the middle of the night & are still being held indefinitely, illegally, either in the army camps or in police stations during the lockdown
The APDP report says; "The situation in Kashmir has gravely impacted children: They have lost their vision due to pellet firing on their eyes by security forces, some have died due to teargas shelling, and many experience post-traumatic stress disorder."
The report says that high instances of night raids by Indian forces have been reported by both Indian and international media and the prevailing atmosphere has a negative impact on children’s mental health in occupied Kashmir.
The APDP report says that the lockdown in Kashmir has severely impacted the ability of people to access food and conduct trade.
Srinagar’s Jamia Masjid has been off-limits for prayers 17 weeks in a row. However, Jamia Masjid is not the only one affected and reports indicate other mosques have also been closed, in an attempt to curb dissent against the Indian government’s decision to abrogate Article 370.
