I sit with a woman 3 times for le podcast.

Once when I check out what she chooses to share online, and what she doesn't.

The next time is during our actual conversation, which unfortunately is often our first and last time speaking  😭

And the third time is in edit.
I let my intuition guide the conversation. It's tricky saying the quiet parts out loud with Black women. It's a responsibility to hold tender space for each lady to be seen and spoken about in a way that I'm never really sure if she's ready for. It's just not our way.
I mean imagine thinking the show were only about travel?! The nuance, the corners and shadows of a woman's life is where she is chiseled. And it has everything to do with how she travels; literally with how she shows up in the world.
I go in stanning with so much love and admiration, because each woman is so fascinating to me already, and I'm excited to talk about all the things.
But honestly, it's tough for me to show up in this way. I talk about it in my episode which will be airing Sunday, July 5th, but it's basically a thing where as we're strangers, I don't know how she'll feel about the conversation. I don't know how she'll feel about me.
Is she proud of what we did together? Will she hate the sound of her voice? Will she share our work?
Out of all the interviews I've sat down for in the past year, only four haven't aired, one of which was a technical difficulty, and another wasn't completed. And only one missed appointment.
I love that the show is about our mothers and grandmothers and the things they gave us, or didn't. And always about the things we have found, or are finding for ourselves.
I move on to the next interview because I'm honoring the commitment and the time I spend with each woman. But in my spirit, you all stay with me. You're not content to me. You are distinct and full-bodied human beings I'm glad to know exist.
