Once again, tech saviors are helping Deaf people by ... building tech that (if it actually works at the level of translation, which it doesn't) only addresses the hearing person's needs.
On a previous go round with this, I had the privilege of working with my colleagues Lance Forshay and Kristi Winter (both Deaf) on this open letter:

http://faculty.washington.edu/ebender/papers/SignAloudOpenLetter.pdf
We lay out in that letter how these kinds of projects instantiated audism and cultural appropriation.

Lance has collected a bunch of resources here: https://sites.google.com/a/uw.edu/uw-asl/home/open-letter
What would it take to get to a society where engineers stop using signed language as toys to show off motion detection systems? How do we fix the engineering (including ML) curriculum to prevent this?
