Today is July 1st, which means International Zine Month is heeeere! And this IZM will also be my 2 year anniversary of making my first zine 😁 In case you're new here, I work in libraries and I also kinda like zines. So let's get into #IZM2020 shall we?! https://twitter.com/alexwrekk/status/1277807478596464642?s=20
1. What is a zine? Come up with a definition in your own words.

A zine is a self-made publication designed to subvert mainstream ideas around publishing and it can be about WHATEVER YOU WANT. How cool is that?! You can make one using some paper, pens, and a photocopier. #IZM2020
My friend Sam also made this helpful zine about how to pronounce the word 'zine' #IZM2020
Before I get into Day 2 of #IZM2020 I have to share this from my Mum.
2. Zine rewind. Reread your favorite zines.

I don't really have 'favorite' zines as I have so many so how do I choose!? But I will take today (and hopefully each night throughout #IZM2020 to read and reread zines.
if my heart is a .zip file by Allison Gallagher.
I love works that explore romance and technology. If you've ever been in a long-distance rship..

"We gift one another
boxes and boxes of floppy disks
for things that could be said more succinctly
with one hard drive." #IZM2020
Reserve and Renew #3, the LIS mental health zine.
"Exploring the intersections of mental health [and] illness, and libraries/archives work."
This one is close to my heart. Reading it reminds me of why I make & read zines: to feel less alone. #IZM2020

I was going to read more zines but reading the last one has flooded my head with ideas for a new zine so I must put these down! #IZM2020
I didn't post for #IZM2020 yesterday because I stayed up until midnight watching the Babysitters Club. Day 3 coming forthwith.
3. Look up virtual zine events to attend this month. Here are some virtual zine events I've enjoyed recently:

Glasgow Zine Fest remote zine fair, by the fab folk @GlasgowZineLib https://glasgowzinelibrary.com/zinefair

Other Worlds Zine Fair https://wiip.co/Other-Worlds-2020.f-M6sNQB3r2UXTSPc0-PE.sC2B950/ #IZM2020
The @QuimbysBooks Zine Club Chicago Online, who made me feel SO welcome as someone who didn't know anyone, and who'd never been to their in-person shop
https://twitter.com/QuimbysBooks/status/1265484473073831937?s=20 #IZM2020
We have an event coming up on July 21 for the Zine Librarians unConference, on International Zine Library Day. More details to come soon. I hope you'll join us http://zinelibraries.info/wiki/zluc2020/  #IZM2020
4. Explore marginalised voices in the Americas. Buy, read, share zines written about racial justice and by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous & People of Colour)

I found some zines by BIPOC from not just the Americas as there isn't a prompt for Indigenous folk from Aus or NZ #IZM2020
A big shout out to Zine Gang Distro, that stock one of my zines along with many other rad zines by fab folk!

10. Write a letter or send a message to a zine maker.

I love getting zines in the mail. They often end up in random spots around my house. #IZM2020
Sometimes I buy them. Other times I do swaps. I find these zines when going about my day and they are a nice surprise. #IZM2020
I have a few zine penpals but I'd love to have more. If you're a zinemaker and you want to be penpals, let me know! 🙂 #IZM2020
I don't talk about it here much, but I'm so glad we started a staff zine, and endlessly grateful to my colleagues for sharing their creativity with us.
10. International Zine Day!

Do you want to buy a zine from Australia about cat body language, modelled here by my very own floof? #IZM2020

13. Make up a zine superstition and share it.

I don't have a superstition, but a proverb:

You will always leave the zine fair with more zines than you arrived with... #IZM2020
14. ValenZines Day! Give yourself some zine love in whatever way it means to you.

Rereading these gems by @grillzoid. Can't wait for there to be a whole book! #IZM2020
15. Free Zine Day. Offer your zine for free online. #IZM2020

Zines I've created/compiled that you can download for free online:

18. Zine Trade Day! Ask someone to trade or swap zines with you.

I'm just a girl, standing in front of Twitter asking.. do you want to swap zines? #IZM2020
One of the best things to come out of the pandemic in my opinion has been virtual zine fairs. I've been exposed to zines I otherwise wouldn't, and I am so grateful to zine fair/fest organisers for pulling these things together for zinesters and patrons alike.
I've also been making my way through @DCzinefest's Zirtual Zummer Zine Zelebration which has so much good stuff on there that I've only gotten half way through. All of which are zines I've never seen before #IZM2020 https://dczinefest.wordpress.com/zirtual-zummer-zine-zelebration/
