The emotional whiplash I'm experiencing alternating between the #FierceFutures fundraiser on my computer and the NY City Council livestream on my phone...
That said... 😍
Some good news: I'm hearing no cuts to classroom budgets/teachers or CUNY ASAP program.

But the bar shouldn't be on the ground. These programs shouldn't have had to face cuts.
Speaker Johnson admits this budget doesn't actually meet the demand for $1 billion spending cuts to NYPD.

Says headcount is reduced by over 1000 officers but (rightfully) says this isn't enough/ I've seen debate over whether this will be undermined by future incoming cadets.
Corey Johnson is really trying to lay this all on the mayor's lap. Focusing on "wins" re: education and social programs De Blasio tried to cut, says wouldn't budge on some things.

Keeps saying compromises needed to be made and that tonight is "just the beginning." We'll see...
"If you wish to speak, please us the raise hand function on Zoom" - Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo
lolol nice to know legislative bodies still suffer with ppl forgetting to unmute themselves.
So many CMs speaking before this vote. Glad Van Bramer is at least using the time to tear apart this budget, though.

Started by focusing on how overtime numbers De Blasio/Johnson pushed as cuts aren't really reliable cuts.
The amount of times we've already heard "unmute yourself" 😭
Oh, okay so we're just letting council members blow through time limits to read platitudes off their computer...

"This budget is evidence your voices have been heard" - CM Rose, thanking BLM protesters while praising a budget protesters have overwhelmingly criticized.
It's depressing that so many council members have to count avoiding cuts to youth programs & classrooms as wins and insist it's the most they could do given De Blasio's priorities.
lololol not Borelli with a poster... 🙄

Nothing he's saying about the "necessity" of police is based on statistics or data, despite his infographic.
CM Margaret Chin bringing the right energy to this Zoom meeting. But for all the valid points she's making about this city leaving marginalized communities behind... says she's voting yes???
OMG MENCHACA IS UP.
CM Menchaca rightfully calls out @NYCCouncil for only holding one public hearing on this budget and negotiating behind closed doors. Talks about why constituents are desperate to reach them, even on their cellphones
Antonio Reynoso up next. Talking about how $1 billion is an arguably arbitrary number when the end goal is to bring an end to an abusive system of policing in NYC.

Won't bring about the level of systemic change communities are demanding. Shouted out groups like @MaketheRoadNY!
Someone rang Laurie Cumbo's doorbell right after Reynoso spoke. 😂
Okay they're doing a roll call vote on all items, Cumbo including instructions for how to vote yes on everything but budget.
Okay looks like everyone is explaining their votes down the line so I'm going to stop live-tweeting.

BTW: Ayala using her time more to call out protesters showing up at CM's homes and calling their personal numbers thant talk abt budget and actual vote.
Okay, back to this thread because I'm not sure which is more bizarre: CM Holden's Zoom background or his rant about voting no because the City Council is caving to an "anti-cop mob."
Almost every single "yes" vote essentially admitting this budget sucks and doesn't do enough to meaningfully cut NYPD budget, but taking what they can get given obstinance from De Blasio on the issue.

This is the position @NYCMayor has put us in.
How is our mayor supposedly "progressive" when the entire council is saying that avoiding cuts to youth summer programs, social services and classrooms was the compromise?

It's a hollow word at this point. I hope his shameful legacy haunts De Blasio the rest of his life.
CM Lander votes no on budget, but reminds council that policing cannot be effectively addressed with a single vote. References the Community Safety & Violence Prevention being championed to replace police in Minneapolis and calls council to work toward something similar together.
CM Levin (my district's council member) votes yes, but spends time criticizing the budget and inaction on police in brutality. He also says he believes current school safety agents should be a part of the process of removing NYPD from schools, though... disappointing imo.
Okay I promise I'm done with this thread now, but going to leave you with these encouraging words from @NYCCouncil38 explaining his no vote.
