As Pride Month ends we’re celebrating the love and freedom of our client Lucero (left) and her partner Yeimy. They met in detention. Lucero suffered unimaginable abuse in her childhood in Mexico because she is lesbian. [thread]
She survived domestic violence as an adult, and eventually fled to the US to escape threats on her life. But when she bravely shared these experiences in court, she lost. We helped her appeal the decision. Again she was denied. Then we helped her appeal to the 9th Circuit. [2]
After 3 yrs of being detained Lucero was released on parole in March and officially granted protection under the Convention Against Torture last week! This photo shows Lucero hugging her daughter in Phoenix. [3]
She’s thrilled to be reunited with her and with Yeimy, who exited detention first. They plan to marry once the pandemic ends and are already building a happy life together. [4]
When you support us, you help win freedom and safety for people like Lucero. Thank you, and happy Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈 [end thread]
