I’ve seen a lot of people saying that there could be a lot of harm in threads like this, so I will be posting an accompaniment of my own. https://twitter.com/dlorlou/status/1277832542045913090
1. People tell you to breathe but I’m going to tell you to taste, touch, feel everything and then imagine the memory burning away. I’m going to tell you to stay in the moment and persist in life for no one but you.
2. Your favorite food, you probably enjoy something consumable. I want you to drink it in, appreciate the flavor and the way it runs over your tongue. I want you to memorize every good thing about that food, and imprint it to memory like it’s all you need.
3. Think of the places you’ve been, the ones that have good memories. No matter how small that memory is. You could have sat on a porch or found your favorite snack in a gas station. I want you to remember your little moments, and know that there will always be another.
4. I want you to remember the last time you sang really loudly, ever in your life. No matter how bad you think you are, I want you to belt out those lyrics until your throat burns, I want you to feel alive at least in that one moment. Wherever you are.
5. Fuck future kids, be a kid now. Write out that you’re young and learning, you’re old and learning, you are you and you’re learning. Then take all the lessons you’ve learned and shoot those baskets like Kobey Bryant and every other kid in school. Each painful lesson, tossed out
6. Talk to yourself like you’re someone else. Have a regular conversation, tell yourself jokes and say all the nice things to yourself that you know you want to hear. Laugh, find your smile and light. Know you have it, even if you have to keep it to yourself for a bit.
7. Think about something you’ve wanted to try and start planning for it. Just because you can’t do it now doesn’t mean you can’t in the future. Something small to stick around with. Dress up like Elvis, sing karaoke, try stand up. Go find something weird and do it.
8. Dye your hair, get a new shirt, get a tattoo or piercing. Get something that makes you laugh, or something that holds a piece of you. Just be as authentically you as you can take and then some more. Make yourself match your biggest dreams.
9. Go out and give people really weird compliments. Tell them you like their shoe laces or their eyebrows. Tell them a joke, make yourself laugh. Gallivant through the street and sing Christmas carols, even if it’s July. Enjoy your moment, it is yours.
10. Some people say read your favorite book and I do enjoy that but if you don’t, watch a favorite show, or make a favorite show. All you need is multiple costumes and script. Be every part of yourself and savor the depth that lays in your heart. Enjoy every facet of yourself.
11. Smile at the mirror for no reason, frown at the mirror, growl at the mirror. Become accustomed to every expression you can make, even the funny ones or the dumb ones. The sad ones, the happy ones. Enjoy every mask you have and make a game of it because each one is yours.
12. OP had a point on curling up and enjoying the rain sound but I personally felt alive in the rain. Toss on some clothes and go splashing in some puddles, take some rain photos, jump, slide, get some scrapes, enjoy how it feels on your skin. The coolness and the flash.
13. Watch the sunset on the beach or you can go make your own. Buy some paint cans and make your own sunset, or do it by yourself. Paint your perfect night or dream. Your perfect day. Slosh some colors together and make the masterpiece you feel in your heart.
14. If you’re able to have a water balloon fight more power to you, but if you aren’t then pull a prank. It’s a shame to contain all mischief to one day and one day only. Make some prank calls, ding dong ditch. Be the miscreant of a Karen’s nightmares and enjoy it.
15. If you can’t see your favorite artist, be your favorite artist. Dress up and do impressions, sing their songs, see how many photos you can photoshop yourself as. Be goofy, proud, kinda a dick, love the range of your own emotion and feelings.
16. OP said get in touch with your past but get in touch with your present. If you see that person that you always wanted to try to be friends with go talk to them. Not for them but for you, get used to doing stuff just to make yourself smile. Say a joke, sass someone. Be you.
17. Um, no offense but screw the newborn if it’s not your thing. Hold yourself, swaddle yourself like the newborn baby we all want to be. Back before bills and drama and just enjoy your self made mummification. Feel the warmth and breathe it in. Also enjoy getting out. Good luck.
18. OP said make someone else laugh, but I want to challenge you to make yourself laugh. Not just an awkward chuckle, no. You’re gonna turn into your personal favorite comedian and make yourself laugh so hard that you cry. It’ll be perfect because it’s yours and no one else’s.
19. Go to therapy if you can afford it, if not then write it out. No one will have your exact experience but you will, and that means something. Write it down just like your life is a book, because it is. It’s your story and you have every right to tell it, whenever you’re ready.
OP said make yourself laugh in this one but I already said that so finally I’m going to tell you to cry. Let it out, because it’s not weak. You are not weak. You’re human, and you’re growing one day at a time. Just let it out and let yourself just be.
20. And lastly, do it for you. Not anyone else. Stay because there’s so much that you want to do or see. Do it for your smile, your laugh, your tears. Please stay, because you’re the only person strong enough to keep you here. Stay because it’s you, and you owe yourself that.
Please stay, not because the world needs you or other people rely on you but because there is something you want or deserve out of this life. Stay for your small moments or big ones. Stay for your memories and jokes. Stay because you deserve the world you create for yourself.
At the end of the day I can’t stop you, no one really can. But will I tell you that life is worth it, absolutely. Because there are so many small happy moments that stack up to big ones. And so much laughter I would have missed, I stayed for me and I hope you do too.
No one said it’d be easy, but I promise you it’s worth it either way. If you need help please call: 1-800-273-8255 for the US Suicide hotline. 1-866-488-7386 for Trevor project. Or find a hotline for your area. Please get the help you need because you deserve it.
You deserve this life and every life that you have the potential to build. Don’t let anyone make you think otherwise. You deserve the light within yourself, embrace it, it is yours.
I wanted to highlight in this thread the importance of the singular battle that is depression. So many people say “don’t leave because of this person or that person” I want to pose an argument that centers on you because there are so little arguments for doing it for you. (1)
