There was a time when people thought abolishing slavery was radical — but it happened, @606hoodlum says. People couldn't imagine Black people not being slaves, just like people can't imagine a world without police and prisons. But it is possible with community investment.
. @mrs_englewood is discussing the psychological warfare that has been used to oppress Black people for years. Older generations have been conditioned not to "rock the boat," which is why some older Black residents may be afraid of conversations about defunding.
"What is safety?" @606hoodlum asks people to think about the safest places in the city. You envision places with an abundance of resources on the North Side, or in Oak Park. Building community, making sure people have their basic needs met = safety. WATCH: https://mixer.com/hideoutchicago?fbclid=IwAR0FTcfi0z-zjccKUWcplQUXr6C8F-PuAIDmZ5zF8bP6RLJ-fnx8yh_lz4E
"We live in a society where nobody wants to admit that they don't know something." - FACTS from @AmaraEnyia. If you're confused about what defunding the police means in terms of community investment, study up! We'll link a study guide after the show.
"You can't say Black Lives Matter and exclude trans Black lives." - @606hoodlum on why Black queer people MUST have a seat at the table.
. @mrs_englewood asks why police are doing traffic stops for expired stickers or plates. Is that making the community safer? Couldn't the city connect people with services if they can't afford a new sticker? Instead of creating a potentially deadly police encounter?
Police often can't do much about domestic abuse situations. Wouldn't wraparound services be more effective than having police show up again and again without solving the root issue? GREAT point by @mrs_englewood
