Since today is the last day of #BlackMusicMonth, I wanted to do something fun and highlight some of the unsung Black girl groups of the 2000’s. A THREAD:
Isyss- Thier songs “Day & Night” and “Single for the Rest of My Life” gained some traction on the R&B charts and on BET’s 106 & Park. Their debut album is still in my rotation til this day!
Fun fact: Member La'Myia is Megan Good’s sister and married to singer Eric Bellinger.
Electrik Red- Signed to The Dream’s Radio Killa Records, their first single “So Good” dropped in 2009, w/ a remix feat. Lil Wayne. Their debut album “How to be A Lady” dropped in May of the same year. Dream did what needed to be done on that debut album. Go listen if you haven’t
Dame Four- For some, this is where we first met Mila J. Signed to Chris Stokes’ T.U.G. label, Stokes wanted to tap into his girl group bag after the success of IMX and B2K. “How We Roll” was their debut song & video. We didn’t hear much after and eventually Mila went solo.
TG4- Another group in Chris Stokes’ attempt at building a successful girl group was TG4. My R&B homegirl, Sevyn Streeter served as one of the founding members. Their lead single “Virginity” didn’t perform that well on the charts, but the video received a little play on BET & MTV
RichGirl- Years later, we saw Sevyn all grown up in RichGirl. I wanted so much for them! We know Sevyn has gone on to write for everybody & their mama & has found her own success as an artist. Kristal is now a member of June’s Diary & Brave appeared on R&B Divas & in a few films
Lyric- I feel this one is a bit of wild card, but again, I’m sure I remember every video that probably ever aired on 106 & Park, so here we are. Their lead single “Young & Sexy” featured Loon (who was a big deal at the time). Fun fact: Member Tayma is from Detroit.
Dear Jayne- Another group I remember from the Quiet Storm days was Dear Jayne. “Rain” , their lead single, did reach the Billboard R&B charts, but unfortunately their debut album “Voice Message” was shelved due to music label issues.
Missez-I can count on hand how many people remember this song when I mention it, but if you were a Quiet Storm, BET groupie like myself, you remember this bop with the late Pimp C. Also, Lil Fizz randomly appears in this video.
We all know Cherish. I wanted to end the thread here because if anybody deserves more, it’s them. The looks. The range. If you didn’t sing “Unappreciated” with your friends and have it playing in the background on your MySpace page, did you even have the Black girl experience?
I hope all the Black women in this thread are doing amazing. How many did you know? Who else should be here?

Remember Black music is and always will be THEE standard. Again, happy #BlackMusicMonth!
