Lots of tips for new interns but we haven’t forgotten you, @BMCimRES new junior residents starting tomorrow! For me, the beginning of junior year was harder than intern year. Here are some hard learned lessons. Just my two cents. Seasoned residents - please add to this list
You’re going from being amazing at your job (June intern) to being pretty basic (July resident). Expect another steep learning curve. Don’t compare yourself to your past self!
Plan your day: I’ve dragged my team from the 3rd floor to the 7th and back to the 4th because I didn’t plan ahead. Make a mental map of rounds and write it down on your list. You will forget otherwise.
I’ve also seen a patient at 11am when they should have been seen first. I used to ask the interns “is there anyone you’re worried about”. I now also ask “is there anybody you need to make urgent decisions on”. You can’t remember everything about your patients anymore.
Do not interrupt presentations. Please please please don’t . If you hear something you want to clarify - write it down and bring it up later. An intern who has lost their train of thought will be mad at themselves for messing up all day (I’ve been that intern)
Look at them when they’re presenting. It’s easy to look at the computer screen as you’re gathering data yourself. Nod or smile now and then. Presenting to an expressionless face can be super intimidating.
It’s 2pm, tasks are piling. Ask your intern for the one thing that they just do not want to do (most likely it will be to get outside records). Do it for them, let them spend that time talking to their patient or taking a breather.
Don’t force yourself to give formal teaching every day. Because you’re teaching all the time!! Whether it’s talking to a patient who wants to leave AMA or removing a central line. They’re watching and learning from you nonstop.
There is more than one way to skin a cat, more than one way to diurese someone and more than one way to treat their pain. Right? Allow them them to do things their way too, let them see the art in medicine for themselves.
Have a pot luck/ice cream rounds/something fun at the end of their rotation. Celebrate them- they deserve it!
Good luck to you! It’s going to be an incredible year. You’ll grow so much as a leader, teacher, and physician. And I hope you’ll have an attending like @JamesCHudspeth to guide you through it all on your first attempt.
