A resource to follow-up: According to Jacobson (2015) over 80% of queer men experience some form of interpersonal violence in their lives and, due to lack of trust in structures and fear of being seen as weak, heavily underreport.
Emerson failed Jake and has failed many others and I know how hard it is to come forward on this, especially as a queer man in a double-bind culturally where queer men are both seen as weak and as stigmatized for the violence that occurs to them.
This is not to divert from the disproportionate rates of women + femmes who experienced systemic failures and violent assaults at EC. These failures are all interconnected by a unilateral failure for Emerson staff to free itself from sympathy towards the oppressor.
This has been at the forefront of student dialogue on campus for over ten years now, and today& #39;s statement shows Emerson is STILL not ready or equipped to seek the radical accountability it will take to free itself from a cycle of being complicit in violence.
I stand with all of the brave folks behind @NoMoreECAbuse and @SSSatEmerson who are keeping this crucial conversation alive. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. You are showing true freedom and grace by being able to offer your pain for future Emersonians to live less in fear.
And to add a quick note regarding sexual + physical IPV in queer communities, this issue was not directly studied until THE LAST DECADE. Trans femmes + bisexual femmes report almost a 50% rate of sexual assault, lesbian women 30%, and queer men around 20-25%.
Last tweet in the thread! - Naturally the numbers vary across many studies. Here is a round-up by HRC: https://www.hrc.org/resources/sexual-assault-and-the-lgbt-community">https://www.hrc.org/resources...
