Possibly unpopular character design opinion: you can absolutely make your lack of direction and struggle to create depth work to your advantage
You don& #39;t know what they want to do with their life? That& #39;s their journey now. They lack that one passion that makes them stand out? Let them go into the world to find it. Literally all that matters is that you add a personal touch to their story. Write what you know.
And if that means creating their character on a situational basis & establishing their personality as you go, that& #39;s cool too. Sometimes things just pop into place without you even noticing and you end up with a well-rounded character regardless, bc you did what came naturally
Of course those extremely detailed questionnaires can help you flesh them out. But if your soul isn& #39;t it, it won& #39;t matter whether your character likes orange juice or not. More detail doesn& #39;t necessarily equal a better character if it only distracts you from your story goals.
It all completely depends on what kind of writer you are and how you operate. I don& #39;t think there& #39;s a "right" or "wrong" way to approach character design as long as you end up creating something you love. A lot of the time that& #39;s all you need to make a connection with the reader.
