Alice Louise Reynolds helped BYU's library collect 100,000 volumes! 100,000!!

(Side note: If I were given the power to re-name the BYU HBL library, I would re-name it the Reynolds Library)

Rep. Amy Brown Lyman pushed for support of the federal Sheppard–Towner Act, which provided for federally financed instruction in maternal & infant health care and gave 50–50 matching funds to individual U.S. states to build women's health care clinics. https://twitter.com/BetterDays2020/status/1134589915251871744?s=20
Final note on Amy Brown Lyman, who most BYU students have never heard of & would know more about if we honored her, learned stories of women like her:
She was involved in Settlement House programs in Chicago & assoc. w/ Jane Addams, founding US sociologist
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amy_B._Lyman
Prof. Amy Harris said mentoring female undergraduates to pursue graduate degrees & feel that they belong in their chosen fields is one of the most important things that can be done to increase female faculty at BYU & higher ed., particularly in fields of study w/ very few women.
-My students counted BYU women faculty representation:

16% of tenured faculty
32% of pre-tenured, tenure-track faculty (encouraging)
(44% of non-tenure-track faculty)

Yet, women of color faculty can count on a fellow woman of color colleague in 7 of 100 or so academic depts.
One of those women of color who is a BYU faculty member is Prof. Kori Wakamatsu, Korean American activist who fights anti-blackness & guest teaches #HONRS277 Race & Music each year. Kori is a role model to women of color students like Egypt Byrd & @hannaeyremusic
My colleague @DrMikaelaDufur Assoc. Dean of @byu_fhss is a an incredible mentor to women of color undergrad & grad @BYUsociology students now in excellent Ph.D. programs at @USCSociology @NCStateCED @ualbany & beyond: https://twitter.com/DrMikaelaDufur/status/1003718493202575360?s=20
Daniela, who @DrMikaelaDufur mentored and who I had the privilege of having in #SOC323 Race & Ethnicity & #SOC623 Grad Seminar in Race when she did MS program @BYUsociology is tearing it up @NCState https://twitter.com/NCStateEEPA/status/1219001734250598401?s=20
I would *not* be a professor were it not for women who mentored me, from Renata Forste @BYU, & @PrincetonSPIA @princeton: Sara McLanahan (who wrote that I should apply for PhD in margins of my MPA paper), Amy Lerman, Marta Tienda, & esp @trounstine, my all-time fav professor!
By the way, I was mentored, taught, and shaped profoundly by many Black women in particular when I was growing up on Chicago's South Side. See my extended tribute here: https://twitter.com/JakeRugh/status/1270558510770647042?s=20
Let us never forget that women of color face an even higher burden, even when rising to the top in academia and beyond: https://twitter.com/JakeRugh/status/1273077054699786248?s=20
Shout out not only to my colleague @DrMikaelaDufur but also men like @SociologistRay & @drbrooms7 who is a man few parallels when it comes to #CiteBlackWomen & mentor Black women like @DebLexis @Kid_melodie when he came to BYU & met Black student leaders: https://twitter.com/JakeRugh/status/1089004148907864065?s=20
@tineshacapri's Honors Thesis on Biracial Black Women Identity based on her fieldwork in the New York City metro area remains one of the most downloaded @BYUHonorsProg theses https://twitter.com/JakeRugh/status/987534499817799680?s=20
@DebLexis, BYU Black Student Union president & my former #SOC323 TA has laid out 7 action steps for BYU's new racial equality committee to tackle now, in 2020, incl. this first step:
1. Rework the general education curriculum to be anti-racist https://twitter.com/JakeRugh/status/1273417290273271808?s=20
2. Create a religion course that addresses solely race & racism in the LDS church
3. Create a diversity & inclusion office managed by faculty trained in diversity & inclusion
4. Devise a plan to recruit & retain black faculty and black students - @DebLexis https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/commentary/2020/06/17/dborah-alxis-byu-must-act/
5. Make racist actions an Honor Code violation
6. Restructure the guidelines of cultural & ethnic clubs so that they can better sustain themselves.
7. Change the name of buildings eponymously named after racists & rename after...POC & women like Jane Manning James. - @DebLexis
@SoelbergGrace has been an amazing TA for both #SOC323 Soc of Race & Ethnicity and #HONRS227 Race & Music, two courses I teach passionately with the goal that we must transform from non-racist to anti-racist. Grace has multiple academic scholarships & is an incredible teacher.
Finale: Deans/directors of 16 BYU colleges/schools/divisions:
2010: 1 of 16 were women
2020: 6 of 16 are women, incl.
@BrigitteMadrian @BYUMarriott
Mary Anne Prater @BYUMcKaySchool
Renata Forste @BYUKennedyCtr
Jane Lassetter @BYU_Nursing
Susan Sessions Rugh @BYU Undergraduate Ed.
Dean Susan Rugh is my mom and I couldn't be more proud of her leadership and influence for the greater good, esp. as @BYU enters year 3 of the process to re-envision and totally redesign their GE requirements: https://twitter.com/JakeRugh/status/1236805037747138560?s=20
BYU General Education Design

"In the Fall of 2018, BYU President Kevin J Worthen gave a charge to faculty and staff at BYU concerning BYU’s General Education program."

[Charge to re-design & overhaul BYU GE requirements]: https://newge.byu.edu/byu-general-education-design
BYU UE "committed to building on and expanding our diversity requirement in our [BYU GE] program,...developing plans to better prepare our students to understand systemic racism, confront their own biases, and work toward racial equity at the university." https://ugrad.byu.edu/undergraduate-educations-statement-on-inclusion-and-diversity
If you made it to the end of this thread, please RT to support women at BYU and in higher education, incl. women of color. Also, be sure to mentor women, hire women, and encourage women to pursue further education. They did that for me. I am just trying to pay it forward. Thx!
Yes, Flo is killing it at @ualbany Soc! Read her outstanding work here, free and open access @SociusJournal https://twitter.com/DrMikaelaDufur/status/1278109193879252993?s=19
