Miriam Nelke joined BYA in 1900 & *founded* the school’s theatre dept. Nelke taught elocution (expressive speaking), literary interpretation & performance. Amy Brown Lyman attended BYA from 1888 to 1890...She later completed additional work at the @UMich, @UUtah , & @UChicago. Prof. Amy Harris said mentoring female undergraduates to pursue graduate degrees & feel that they belong in their chosen fields is one of the most important things that can be done to increase female faculty at BYU & higher ed., particularly in fields of study w/ very few women.
-My students counted BYU women faculty representation:
16% of tenured faculty
32% of pre-tenured, tenure-track faculty (encouraging)
(44% of non-tenure-track faculty)
Yet, women of color faculty can count on a fellow woman of color colleague in 7 of 100 or so academic depts.

One of those women of color who is a BYU faculty member is Prof. Kori Wakamatsu, Korean American activist who fights anti-blackness & guest teaches #HONRS277 Race & Music each year. Kori is a role model to women of color students like Egypt Byrd & @hannaeyremusic

I would *not* be a professor were it not for women who mentored me, from Renata Forste @BYU, & @PrincetonSPIA @princeton: Sara McLanahan (who wrote that I should apply for PhD in margins of my MPA paper), Amy Lerman, Marta Tienda, & esp @trounstine, my all-time fav professor!

@SoelbergGrace has been an amazing TA for both #SOC323 Soc of Race & Ethnicity and #HONRS227 Race & Music, two courses I teach passionately with the goal that we must transform from non-racist to anti-racist. Grace has multiple academic scholarships & is an incredible teacher.
