How I Would’ve Handled Normani’s Solo Career If I Were Part Of Her Team: A Thread
I would keep Love Lie’s original February 14th release date, because there was nothing wrong with that. What I WOULD change is releasing the video two days later. To this day I don’t understand why they did that.
Instead of finally promoting the song two months later in April, this performance would’ve only been a week after the song’s release—with other performances over time.
Pre-BBMAs, the song was still stuck in the top 60. We were still fighting for promo. We’ve been dealing with these issues since the very beginning of her solo career and her team has showed little to no change. https://twitter.com/chartdata/status/996114252652949504?s=20
So if we had gotten more performances prior to this moment, if the song would’ve got pushed even more, we could’ve seen the top 10 a lot earlier.
This leads me to my next point. I think all of the Nation can agree that not releasing a song after the BBMAs was one of her earliest lost opportunities. She had HYPE like she never did before. We didn’t get a new song until AUGUST. And it was this...
During this period, she used to show us that she was in the studio a lot more often. I’m sure she could’ve had a moment like Motivation if she had just released a song earlier. After August, we wouldn’t get a new song until Tidal x Brooklyn. https://twitter.com/Normani/status/1054201001207578624?s=20
Much like Motivation was later handled, it was clear that she had only released the Calvin songs so she would have material to perform. I would’ve put out an EP with more than 2 songs or just cancelled the gig altogether. https://twitter.com/NormaniUpdate/status/1050054750815834112?s=20
Of course, one of the most frustrating things about this was the fact that she started off her set with Waves on October 23rd and we had to beg her to release the song until November 14th, when she surprised announced it on a week day. https://twitter.com/Normani/status/1062779109976096768?s=20
WAVES SHOULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED IN OCTOBER. WE SHOULDN’T HAVE HAD TO WAIT NEARLY AN ENTIRE MONTH AND EVEN LONGER FOR THE VIDEO.
After Motivation’s viral success, people began to discover Waves and many of the fandom views it as her best song. Now imagine if it were handled properly. Imagine if we didn’t have to wait 6 months for one televised performance and a video.
I don’t even wanna start with DWAS. Maybe it was the touring, maybe it was a schedule we weren’t aware of. I simply have no idea how this was her most successful song to date and we didn’t even get a SINGLE televised performance for it.
The BBMAs performance had the potential to get this song to #1 and I have no doubts about that. Even after we begged for the rehearsal footage, we got NOTHING. Even if touring was an excuse, she stopped in July, so what was it at that point? https://twitter.com/NormaniUpdate/status/1163437634066223104?s=20
That’s another thing, much like Tidal x Brooklyn, I would not have gone on an entire tour that took up most of my year without an EP or more than one new song at least. Motivation should’ve been released during tour. She was getting dragged for the covers
Did the tour give us some good content? It did but at the end of the day, it had no affect on any of the songs she released. She performed them every night in between covers and none of them saw more progress. https://twitter.com/ArianaGrande/status/1150235774824017920?s=20
She teased Motivation on quite literally the second to last day of touring. And it’s clear that because of that song as well as how much time touring took up, her album’s sound changed DRASTICALLY. Sometimes I wish she toured for a shorter time. https://twitter.com/Normani/status/1149531756795576325?s=20
Now onto Motivation. Her fans are aware she might’ve just released the song for the VMAs, but locals weren’t aware of that. Potentially new fans weren’t aware of that. This was her first ever solo song. It should’ve been pushed in more ways that it was.
The song should’ve been released earlier in the summer so it could’ve really taken over, and the performances shouldn’t have stopped at the VMAs. She could’ve easily taken this to late night shows or morning summer promo shows.
The other collabs didn’t count. You could tell not a single one of the artists that worked on the song actually cared about them. Otherwise it would’ve gotten at least a slight push. This did nothing to move her forward.
So later, after her team officially let Motivation go (no mercy or anything despite how much the main outfit was being recreated) we saw Mani step into her status in the fashion world. And we got this viral performance.
She became a brand ambassador, which was great, but as a musician I’d think that it would be smarter to incorporate your music into your brand deals. If you’re a singer that’s what you should be doing. If you’re a model that’s a different story. https://twitter.com/voguemagazine/status/1197577545413222404?s=20
We saw what that could’ve been this year. But she was advertising a song that came out two years ago. A song that already reached its peak.
Yes, she’s getting a bag. Yes, these brand deals have the POTENTIAL to be purposeful if she utilized them the way she was supposed to. But again, if her music isn’t also getting the spotlight, how is this beneficial to her music career?
If it’s her image they care about, social media could easily work for that, but we all know how much she hates it. So why not hire a real social media manager to post more than just every few months? https://twitter.com/NormaniUpdate/status/1275569346954199040?s=20
Her last tweet was responding to something over a month ago. We’ve tried creating positive environments as fans but it seems like whenever she’s on here there’s more discussion about her blocking someone than anything else. This needs to change. https://twitter.com/Normani/status/1275234341732470784?s=20
If it’s not her who runs her account—stop the blocking. It doesn’t build a good reputation in the long run. People use it as a joke and they forget about the actual trauma she experienced on here. If she just interacted with fans a little bit more, none of this would be an issue
Now let’s talk about the one and only song she released this year. In January. Pre-Pandemic. Megan asked her to feat because she didn’t want to sing. Atlantic gave up on the song and a song that wasn’t even the lead single saw more success.
It didn’t help that directly after this song and how it performed, we had to deal with our first and only performance of the year being one of the worst days in Nation history. And we’ve gotten NOTHING since. So still no redemption. Still no recovery. https://twitter.com/IMSCREAMINK/status/1276702145182674944?s=20
We’ve seen her peers and older managing to give their fans at least one performance at home. We know she was able to give multiple photoshoots at home and we saw her studio. We know she’s capable of giving us a performance. So why haven’t we gotten one?
What happened to releasing a song during quarantine? Why do we still know absolutely nothing about the album after 2 years? Why can’t we get more transparency instead of suspense? https://twitter.com/nkhworldwide/status/1251732225357418496?s=20
There’s not much I can say or do now. Locals have been noticing her absence nearly a year now. We as a fandom are still clueless but push through to defend her. She’s always the topic of discussion so the people are clearly here for another song. https://twitter.com/ira/status/1277475855426416645?s=20
@BrandonSilv @keepcool @s10ent I literally had to make this because her name wouldn’t stop showing up every New Music Friday. The people are waiting. Her name stays in their mouths. HEAR THIS.
