Here’s McConnell advancing one of the most pernicious myths about the filibuster: that it promotes moderation. There’s no real evidence this is true. OTOH the filibuster singlehandedly blocked civil rights bills for 87 years & is now blocking solutions to our major challenges.
The filibuster was not invented to promote moderation and has never really served that purpose. It was invented to allow a minority of white conservatives impose their will on a changing country, and that is the purpose it serves today.
Instead of promoting moderation, the Framers knew supermajority thresholds would provide an irresistible temptation to the minority to block everything the majority wanted to do, and warned against them. The filibuster was invented later & used mainly to defend white supremacy.
If eliminating the filibuster would turn the Senate into the House, someone should have told the Framers that, since they created both chambers as majority-rule institutions and established clear rules and norms to limit Senate debate. https://twitter.com/woolandwine69/status/1278092028019200001?s=21 https://twitter.com/woolandwine69/status/1278092028019200001
The key to understanding the filibuster is to assume that most of what you’ve been told about it is bullshit.
