Something I’ve been noticing recently in the CoS DM Discord (but which is absolutely not unique to that community) is this trend of new people coming in, dropping a large chunk of text with a “Any thoughts or suggestions?” And being all pikachuface when there are no replies.
Providing feedback takes a lot of time and effort! In a community where every single member is also working on their own similarly-sized campaign projects, it’s unrealistic to expect hordes of people hovering around just waiting to deliver instant *unpaid* editing and balancing.
An incomplete list of things you can do that may get more people to take a look:
- A summary of what the piece is and some context
- What kind of feedback you’re looking for: copyediting, game balancing, narrative plausibility
- Any specific concerns you want people to zero in on
Of course it also pays off to have already spent some time in the community and built bonds, so that people know they’re not pouring their effort into a stranger who’s going to ghost - they feel that you’d be willing to reciprocate when they need it too.
