The 100 year anniversary of my high school is coming up in 2022 and someone started a fb group dedicated to working to change the school's mascot by 2022. A girl a few years ago tried to bring it up to admin and the board but she was overruled.

*she was an indigenous student and our mascot is the Indians. She expressed discomfort esp at sporting events and the behavior of the crowd and their type of cheers.
Hopefully we can band together even more now and get things changed.

And unfortunately to my eternal shame, and regret, I was one of the mascots my senior year. I've since learned and grown and realized why that's bad but at the time I went for it. The things our admins told us to "make it okay" weren't even true.
I'll share a link if anyone is interested in signing it and adding a voice to getting our mascot changed. It's past time for offensive mascots/team names/appropriation to end in schools. In more ways than this.
