1. On this day in 1974, Alberta Williams King, the mother of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., died.

What many people don’t know is that she was assassinated just like her son.

In her case, she was shot while attending Sunday church services.
2. Alberta Williams King was born in 1904 in Atlanta. Before she married Martin Luther King Sr., she was a teacher. Like many women at that time, she left her job after getting married.

The Kings had three children: Christine, Martin Luther Jr, and Alfred Daniel.
3. Before she died, Alberta buried her two sons: Martin Luther Jr. and Alfred Daniel aka A.D.

Here she is at Dr. King’s funeral in 1968 along with her daughter-in-law Coretta Scott King and her oldest child, her daughter, Christine King Farris.
4. Alberta Williams King was assassinated in 1974, but her husband Martin Luther King Sr. lived another decade and died of a heart attack in 1984.

Their daughter, MLK’s older sister, Christine King Farris (right), is alive today and 92-years-old.
