some information about zwarte piet, α tradition in the netherlands because i haven’t seen it anywhere on my tl:
firstly, if anyone has α link to α petition that would be greatly appreciated cause i can’t find anything
every year on the 5th of december we have α tradition called ‘sinterklaas’. the story goes that sinterklaas and his zwarte pieten (black piets) come to the netherlands from spain on α boat.
the zwarte pieten are considered sinterklaas his helpers. in reality they are more slaves than helpers, they wrap the gifts and climb through chimneys to deliver gifts to children
every year, white people do blackface to dress up ‘exotic’ and play the role of zwarte piet. they paint their face black and wear big wigs and earrings.
in the last few years there have been continuous protests to get rid of this racist tradition but till now nothing has changed.
i need non-dutch people to learn about this so we can finally make an end to this racist tradition. if anyone has more to add please do
