So for my fellow Indian poets, the past series of tweets was about @aishatonu the editor of Atlanta Review saying "Dear Sir/Madam" as an address is disrespectful, then he/she modified it to "I think it's tacky". I think it speaks to the attitudes many editors here
have about tone/usage of English. Of course, they're blissfully unaware of how colonialism has contributed to said usage. Or how our own languages may require certain forms of politeness / tehzeeb of us. Just something to keep in mind when and if you submit.
The reason I'm especially concerned is because in my years as editor of http://Ultraviolet.in , a feminist website I ran from 2008-2015ish, we received many subs addressed to madam. It's extremely common in India.
This also speaks to the pressure to conform to specific aesthetics. This is also not just about this journal because I've come across others with similar, racist notions of how emails are framed, the use of certain formal words we're taught ins school etc.
Those of us who have the privilege of access to changing western ideas/lingo (through travel, internet etc) are chameleonic. We change as the online culture changes. But not everyone has that privilege.
