First, it’s a myth that Alaska is a red state. Although they generally vote red, 55% of Alaskans consider themselves Independents.

The incumbent Republican Senator, Dan Sullivan, only won in 2014 by 6000 votes, and Trump only won the state with 51% of the vote, the lowest win percentage for a Republican in decades. Recent polls show Trump’s favorability below 50%.

Furthermore, the Republican governor, Mike Dunleavy, is one of the most unliked governors in the country and is even facing a recall. Negative sentiment towards Republicans in the state is relatively high.

Dan Sullivan, is very unpopular right now. Only 47% of Alaskans view him favorably and among Independents only 39% view him favorably vs 43% unfavorable.
Trump’s popularity is even underwater in Alaska with 48% viewing him favorably vs 50% unfavorably.

By a lopsided margin of 56% to 36% a majority of Alaskans prefer a US Senator who is independent of Trump, and the majority of Alaskans view Sullivan as a Trump ally who has voted with the Trump/McConnell agenda over 97% of the time.

Al Gross is an independent who has been endorsed by the DSCC. He’s an orthopedic surgeon, commercial fisherman, and lifelong Alaskan with deep ties to the state.

His father was the Dem AG of Alaska and his mother created the United Fishermen of Alaska and founded the League of Women Voters in Alaska.
Al also volunteers every year at a hospital in Cambodia.
