Hello :) We will be live tweeting our first annual LGBT rights lecture đŸłïžâ€đŸŒˆ The inaugural lecture is by @JonathanCoopr https://www.doughtystreet.co.uk/event/learning-love-again-ghosts-viruses-past-present-and-future.
. @UleleB introduces OUTy Street *blush* by saying we're open to staff, barristers and pupils. "Different groups need to ally themselves about the concerns of our time". This lecture series is about LGBT rights and the inaugural lecture is given by our very own @JonathanCoopr
Jonny's longitudinal knowledge of LGBT rights caused us to think that it was fitting that we invited him to give the inaugural lecture. @UleleB says Jonny will look at the approaches of govts to the HIV criss and see what links can be drawn to the coronavirus crisis.
One of the elements of Coronavirus is about breath, and we saw that with the killing of George Floyd. How can we survive the threats of suffocation we face?
We have 2 respondents: Madeline Rees OBE, Secretary-General of @WILPF and Visiting Professor in Practice at the Centre for Women, Peace and Security at @LSEnews
The second respondent is "Angelic Troublemaker" @bisialimi from Nigeria who will speak after Maddie.
Aaand we're off! @JonathanCoopr says he is going to delve into what happened with HIV, and ask could the extent of the crisis have been avoided. He remembers how terribly awful it was.
Jonny shows a series of slides commemorating those who died from HIV
"When coronavirus is over, I hope we will live in a kinder, gentle and happier world, and where the priority is maintaining the human dignity of others" - @JonathanCoopr
Jonny says Regan and Thatcher's inaction led to thousands dying of AIDS. They ignored the fact that a growing number of men were dying, nurtured a culture of blame, and refused their responsibility. Why did it take a Princess to show compassion?
A government campaign should have been introduced in 1982, but Norman Fowler finally countered the crisis. Why did our scientist prime minister decide not to take action?
@JonathanCoopr plays an audio from a Regan presser. Journalist: "It's known as gay plague"
Audience: "Haha!"
Regan: "I don't have it. Do you?"
"I knew too many who died. I would also lose those I loved. We all knew they died as outsiders. Thatcher knew that, but she supported a culture of hostility. There was no law, there was nothing who protected those with HIV and AIDS."
If there are thousands of excess deaths today, should we also be asking whether serious crimes have been committed?
There is one objective: to mitigate and eradicate.
The UK ethical framework for dealing with pandemics. Human rights are hardly mentioned, yet human rights can get us through these emergencies.
Jonathan Mann: health is a human rights issue, health is a human rights issue.
Jonny outlines the approach of NZ's PM @jacindaardern, who has taken decisions according to a human rights-based approach, and with "Mana" which is linked to human dignity.
