Thoughts on 8.0/First Impressions on Min Min:
Min Min: she is actually very fun and to the people who say she isn’t, then I’m sorry you’re not enjoying it as much as me. Her various arms can change how she plays and the ability to jump and walk during tilts makes her feel a lot
Less stiff than people are saying. I think the character has the ability to be solid high tier, and the thought that she’s bad is likely due to WiFi only on day 1. Megawatt is busted.
Now for the actual patch notes...
-Ike is a FUCKING ISSUE. What was once a 6-4 matchup pretty solidly is now even worse given that nair still has its uses, Aether demands a million times more respect, and other moves like fair and dash attack will now just accidentally kill you.
I’m all for less one-dimensional characters, but giving the games most bnb, effortless characters more ways to kill at sub 100 is absolutely a stupid idea, and the notion that “Ike players need to think” now is just wrong. YOU, fighting him needs to think, because
Instead of just avoiding nair and a few other moves, you need to avoid nair + every other move in his kit. Absolute dogshit.
-Mewtwo recieved more fake buffs, as the dev team continues to completely ignore his giant issue stuck to his ass.
While I appreciate dthrow, bair and other buffs, Mewtwo only gets a bit better, as he has hardly any new confirms, combos, or safety. It’s essentially the same character, but this time he’ll make you say “oh, that did a few more percent, cool”
-villager is one of 8.0’s BIG winners. Dair being faster and up tilt being double the speed will actually give him a good anti air, and another kill/combo option. Up air and down b also have noticeably improved, and looks to be some of the more healthy buffs this patch.
-Captain Falcon is another big winner. Playing him feels so much more smooth and satisfying, and given the reactions of people like Fatality, it’s no understatement to say he’s actually jumped a tier or two. Raptor boost unlocks a whole new combo game, dash attack...
Gives a lot more safety with his burst options, and falcon kick getting a speed buff is certainly not unwelcome. In all, he doesn’t get anything too overbearing, but received the attention he deserved and desperately needed.
-Pit got a few very very good buffs and I’m actually very excited to play him again. Up air grants frametraps against opponents without a jump/fastfallers and a juggling tool that can actually kill, and the ability to round out kill confirms.
The buff to down tilt and smash attacks is also such a godsend, as pit can now actually get conversions and kills with dtilt -> smash attack or dtilt up air. He also gets access to new 50/50s at ledge. But perhaps my favorite thing is his reduced lag on orbitars.
The aerial mobility given to pit when using these prepatch felt so good and had potential, but this buff sent it from having “potential” to actually being a viable strategy. Movement options definitely benefit the pace of the game and in this case make pit not only
Way more fun, but way better as well.
-Marth’s buffs don’t really have too much to talk about...down smash killing faster and bair being more reliable are certainly good changes and up air and fair have undoubtedly gotten better, but that’s about it. Very cut and dry.
Marth’s issues with killing and damage dealing still exist but this is a very good start.
-Corrin got hella buffed. Like hella hella buffed. I definitely think it’s a healthy change, but as someone who has fought possibly the world’s best Corrin, I’m more scared than anything.
Corrin now has kill options, which was one of their main struggles and will now get undoubtedly stronger due to actually being able to kill. Being granted not only strength, but safety on pin, and kill power on uair and bair is a definite plus.
-Bayo is the last character I’m going to talk about...this thread is huge already.
Bayo’s fsmash buff is one of the smaller buffs she recieved but certainly a very strong one. She can now kill off of witch time reliably and it loses to less moves.
However she also got buffs to uptilt and a few other moves that help with combos (ie up b) given that it wasn’t uncommon to take 80% from one combo prepatch, this characters new combos and confirms give her more killpower and a lot more viability overall.
I’m gonna tweet my overall takeaway separately because I doubt anyone actually made it to the end of this thread, but if you did, thanks for your time :)
