Ok so I do a lot of kids and preteens hair. And I’m noticing some stuff.
Parents, Black parents specifically. Y’all please please please do a better job of monitoring what your kids are consuming online. Especially on IG and Tik Tok.
All those videos of white people doing “cute” and “quirky” shit are doing more harm than good. I’m not just saying this because I don’t like white people. They are using these platforms (YouTube too) to indoctrinate our kids.
It may seem harmless and cute. But it’s not. And I’m seeing the affects of it. I’ve had more than one little girl in my chair crying because she doesn’t like her skin or her hair. And then I talk to them about it it almost ALWAYS stems from Tik Tok and YouTube.
Kids are watching these videos of white girls dancing and being “black” and can’t understand what it’s doing to them. So it’s up to us as their parents to watch it.
Yesterday one of my kids was playing Roblox. No problem. I looked at her avatar and the damn thing might as well had been Kylie Jenner no lie. And it made me so sad.
The little girl is a beautiful dark skinned child, with curly kinky hair. And when I asked her why she didn’t make her avatar look like her she said cuz she wanted it to be cute. She doesn’t think her features are cute. Only what she sees being praised online.
It’s honestly why my kids are not allowed to watch YouTube unless I pick the channel and I’m reluctant on letting them explore stuff without me.
The world is trying to convince our kids that white is right. STILL and we have to be better in showing our kids that we are beautiful. That Blackness is ENOUGH.
Honestly I think Black kids should get off of Tik Tok. It’s nothing but white faces. White faces dancing. White faces tryna explain Black history. Just white faces all over the damn place. Our kids deserve better than that.
