Most of the work I've made is available at my website https://jlsteenwyk.com/arts_visual.html but here is a thread of some of the work I have done!

To help bridge the artist-scientist gap, I like to borrow elements from both fields. Here, I created an Andy Warhol-esque portrait of budding yeast
Additionally, I have explored what #algorithms can offer to art. Using popular #R packages like #ggplot2, some for loops, etc., I wrote an algorithm that can make art for me!

Sometimes the #algorithm makes simple images, sometimes the algorithm makes beautifully complex images
I like to also make #purpose-driven art. One matter deeply important to me is #planetary health 🌎🌍🌏. Depicted here is the Hawksbill #turtle, a critically endangered species. The 100 dots decrease in size by 80% reflecting an 80% decline in population size over the last century
If any of my art is familiar to the #science community, it may be because of my very supportive advisor, @RokasLab, who often uses these lab posters I made as an introductory slide for talks.

In the Rokas lab, we infer big trees, study various fungi, and preterm birth in humans.
I've also made various logos including the Evolutionary Studies Initiative ( @EvolutionVU) at @VanderbiltU, a T-shirt for Vandy's dept. of Bio. Sciences, and the logo for ClipKIT, a multiple sequence alignment trimming algorithm http://bit.ly/3iiLwJ5  http://bit.ly/3dLuzn8
Thank you for checking out my art - I hope you've enjoyed this thread. Please feel free to contact me (DM, email, etc.) if you would like to work together on a piece!
