Since 2016, NMWA uses the hashtag #5WomenArtists to call attention to the fact that women haven't been treated equally in the art world and remain underrepresented/undervalued. To mark the end of #PrideMonth I'll share a little about some of my favorite queer black womxn artists.
Mickalene Thomas draws on art history and pop culture to create a contemporary vision of female sexuality, beauty and power. She examines how identity, gender and sense of self are informed by the ways women are represented in art and pop culture.
Zanele Muholi identifies as a visual activist. Their work investigates the severe disconnection between the equality promoted by post-apartheid constitution of South Africa and the ongoing bigotry and violent acts targeting individuals within the LGBTQ+ community.
