I’ve spent the past few months binge-watching The Golden Girls and its ill-fated spin-off, The Golden Palace. Tonight I got to the episode where Don Cheadle’s character confronts Blanche about her nostalgic worship of the Confederate flag. This scene feels especially relevant:
Part Two:

“The legacy of that flag is alive every time I’m walking down the street with a group of my friends and I see a white person cross over to the other side because they’re afraid... So please don’t tell me about that flag, I’ve battled that flag all my life.”
Part Three:

“The whole world is messed up right now, and I would like to see that get better, but in order for that to happen white people are gonna have to start making positive assumptions when they see People of Color.”

This episode came out in 1992.
I can’t keep up with my notifications, so to answer a few of the most common questions:
1. Yes, The Golden Girls had a spin-off. After seven seasons, Bea Arthur wanted to leave the show, which gave rise to The Golden Palace. It didn’t rate well and was canceled after one season.
2. The premise was that the girls, minus Dorothy (although she makes an appearance in two episodes), buy a hotel in Miami and attempt to run it, with mixed results.
3. Yes, Don Cheadle starred in it. He played Roland, the long-suffering hotel manager.
4. The episode with the Confederate flag is Episode 11, “Camp Town Races Aren't Nearly as Much Fun as They Used to Be.” The plot involves Blanche hosting a group called The Daughters of the Traditional South.
5. You can watch the episode on YouTube but the quality isn’t great.
