Please, please, please @cba @thebarcouncil @secir
make urgent representations to the senior judiciary about unnecessary attendance of counsel in person at court. Leicester is back in lockdown because the virus is still in circulation and a second wave generally expected.
1. Travel exposes counsel to risk
2. Travel exposes counsel's family to risk
3. Travel exposes the general public and other court users (& their families) to risk
4. Travel is expensive and trial income has, for almost all of us, been ZERO for months (unlike judicial salaries)
5. Some of us are shielding, as are occupants of our households
6. At court administrative hearings do not resolve the ever growing case backlog
7. There is a desperate need for court rooms to be used for trials and the fewer people circulating at court the better
8. From many counsel's perspective video hearings have been a revelation & something to be developed for permanent use
9. Caring responsibilities are a nightmare at the moment with needless at court attendance
10. 'Business as usual' should mean only essential attendance at court
