How to reduce the appearance of large pores

A THREAD:
First things first.

Pore size is largely determined by genetics.

They can also be influenced by hormonal changes and skin hygiene
When your sebaceous glands produce excessive oil that mixes with the dead skin cells in your pores, your pores can become blocked.

The oil cannot discharge freely from the pores, resulting in your pores becoming wider and more clearly visible. This can also cause blackheads.
So pretty much, when treating large pores, our aim is to reduce oil (sebum) levels in the skin.

We can do this in 2 ways:
- externally
- internally
Externally:

STOP using using products that block your pores or make your skin produce excessive sebum (oil)

This includes oily creams or products that contain dehydrating ingredients such as alcohols and fragrances.
Only use mild, water-soluble facial cleansers and never use solid bars of soap.

The ingredients used to give soap its solid form can block pores and unbalance the skin’s protective barrier.
This chemical right here is your best friend!!

Salicylic acid breaks down fatty compounds on the skin, such as the skin’s natural oils and excess sebum.
Use an absorbent, such as a CLAY mask to absorb the oil from your skin’s surface.

This can be used once or twice a week

It doesn’t necessarily need to be applied to your whole face - just your T-Zone is okay (if this is the problem area for you)
Learn to make sunscreen your best friend!

UV rays in sunlight damage your skin cells so they don’t function as well as they should.

This distorts the pores, so that it is more difficult to discharge the sebum and they become enlarged.
When searching for skincare products, the keyword to look out for is “non-comodegenic”

This means the product is formulated in such a way that it isn’t likely to cause comedones (pore blockage)
Improving your cell’s rejuvenation helps the pores to function better.

Retinoids/Retinol/Vitamin A does this, but often need a doctor’s prescription.
‼️NOT TO BE USED IN PREGNANCY‼️
Formulation is everything.

Gel or liquid forms are less likely to exacerbate oily skin, as they are water-based as opposed to oil-based.
Moisturise your skin!

Oily skin still needs moisture.

Leaving it without makes the skin dehydrated, which can actually make the skin more oily!

Look for a good water based moisturiser.
You may benefit from double cleansing.

This is using an oil-based CLEANSER to remove oil from the skin

Followed by a water-based cleanser to remove any remnants.

*caution- please be weary of how much oil you introduce to your skin*
BE GENTLE WITH YOUR SKIN!

Say NO to popping, squeezing and digging at your spots! This will irritate your pores, making them even more noticeable.

Say NO to using exfoliating gloves on your face!
INTERNAL CHANGES

Drink plenty of water.

Dehydration is a quick way to develop oily skin and clog pores.

Make sure you work towards your 2L everyday 💦
Watch your intake of oily foods!!

The condition of your skin has A LOT to do with your intake of oily foods.
