The IT department @FenlandCouncil checking stuff from 2016 that I am confident will show allegations made on Facebook last night will be seen to have emerged from doctored emails and falsifications. It is no exaggeration to say this is a watershed moment in Fenland politics
What happened last night is that 50 Backpacks organiser Simon 'Spike' Crowson posted the most extraordinary of comments about a local councillor. To say I gasped is an understatement. The whole 50 Backpacks Facebook page was removed overnight - I assume by Facebook
Today top brass @FenlandCouncil have rightly prioritised this as a major investigation and I am assured a statement will be made later. Our newspapers have devoted considerable space (and time spent researching) the work of 50 Backpacks and many positive stories have emerged
The allegations that surfaced last night are breathtaking - and quite frankly I didn't believe any of them for a single moment. So where does that leave us? Initially in the hands of @FenlandCouncil but there will be a role undoubtedly for @CambsCops in all of this
It is truly a bewildering and disdainful set of circumstances. I will get to the bottom of this - and very soon. Councillors who give of their time and effort to serve the public do not under any circumstances merit 'trial by Facebook'.
