What's really annoying and amusing to me about idiots celebrating the ban on TikTok is that these were the same people railing against nepotism and lack of opportunities for outsiders till last week. Now, you're happy an app that broke that barrier is gone.
TikTok truly revolutionised as well as democratized social media in India. For the first time a social media platform had more rural users than urban users. And something about this doesn't sit right with faux merit-obsessed UCs.
Because how do you justify your inherent uniqueness when people with far less resources are if not better than equal to you. That people so vastly different in socio-economic circumstances can put themselves out there without any ceilings and garner fame and praise?
Also interesting about TikTok, other such apps was its normalisation of non-cishet ways. Which is where the disgusting 'beti/meetha' jibes came from. These apps made Pride truly inclusive, provided a medium of expression to so many people who are forced to live a 'normal' life.
For a queer kid who finds little/ problematic representation in MSM, TikTok is an amazing way to know that others like them exist. Imagine the positive impact of seeing queer love being free, adorable and wholesome online. Queer love expressed by ppl who look like you.
TikTok is quick, requires little in terms of resource and only real input required is your creativity. So many ppl, otherwise part of the crowd, have found a voice on the app. From housewives to uncles, aunties, the everyday aam aadmi. You are mad cuz they get to be spl like you.
Many don't even to do it for the following. Don't know how many users even know the concept of influencers or think of this as an occupation. They do it simply to express themselves. This is what you are mad about.
And also lets admit it, we are a nation obsessed with cinema, of living larger than life. What if an app on your phone made you feel like a star for 15 secs? Who would not want that?? All in all, FUCK YOUR ELITISM, LET PEOPLE BE.
