Pricing policies are one of the most cost-effective strategies to reduce #alcohol consumption and alcohol related harm, yet they are the least implemented in the WHO European region.
Raising alcohol taxes is known to reduce #alcohol consumption and improve population health, but out of countries in the WHO European Region do not have any duty on wine at all.
Evidence shows that a minimum unit price on alcoholic beverages is a powerful tool that can reduce inequalities in alcohol-attributable deaths, but only out of countries of the Region have this policy in place.
Current systems of pricing across the WHO European Region vary greatly and are poorly aligned with available evidence. Well-chosen pricing policies can help countries not only lower alcohol consumption and associated health risks, but also benefit economies.
