MY ASABA EXPERIENCE.
The Anger and Opportunities..
#Thread
So I was invited to Asaba as a technical consultant for a new multi-billion Naira Agricultural project for Delta state Gov. nd a private consortium by a visionary and free spirited Elder statesman I recently met on here
On my way coming back, I took unplanned visit to this massive and famous Presco Palm plantation in Obaretin Estate, Benin city.
This is a visit come true for a small plantation owner myself. Visit is long overdue
Wt I saw is so massive that I don't even know when I started crying
What brought d teary eyes is not because I av never been to a massive plantation like ds b4 nor becoz I don't have such capacity but becoz we are not just serious nd insensitive as a nation.Why every state governments are not looking inwards towards Agriculture still marvels me
Okay, let me quickly tell you about the plantation
Presco Oil Mill nd plantation is located in Obaretin Estate just along Warri-Benin road
The massive plantation is owned by a Indian-Portuguese who concessioned both d Obaretin and Ologbo Estate in the 70's from the old Edo Govt
The Obaretin Estate I visited is a 6500 hectares of palm tree plantation, the Ologbo Estate boast of 10000+ hectares bringing d total to about 16813 hectares of palm plantation with about 12565 matures trees.
A palm oil mill with a capacity of 60 tonnes fresh fruit bunches/hour.
A refinery/fractionation plant with a capacity of 100 tonnes/day.
A palm kernel crushing plant with a capacity of 60M tonnes/day. Presco employs about 7,876 people: 507 are permanent staff and 7,369 are contract workers as at November 2019.
Just take a look at the statistics, the massive land usage and the employment opportunities that comes with the plantation. Am not sure any other industry can employ that much to have created more impacts and development. @SalmanDuke @MrAfobaje @bengbenro
There seems to be more beyond the eyes could see why our state Governors just want to collect monthly allocations frm Abuja when every state has d potential to generate massive revenue frm Agricultural investment.
At least, we all know how the Cocoa House in Ibadan came to being.
Every state in Nigeria can have dedicated cash crop and invest massively in such plantation. Especially the Southern states.
We have Cocoa, Castor, Sesame, Cashew and other valuable cash crops that can easily replace the crude oil we relied on.
@ChiefOjukwu @kayodebakre8
Unfortunately, most of our research institutes are in a bad state. Anybody, who has visited CRIN and other institutes in Ibadan will cry for this nation.
Nothing is on going, no reaserch no data, staffs are only been paid monthly.
Our leaders has failed us greatly. @iyaboawokoya
I have always maintained that Nigeria is the most blessed country on earth with abundant natural resources. We hardly experience natural disasters except those man made disasters created by the negligence of our leaders.
@borie_nla
@fimiletoks
Just tell me why @StateofOsun and @oyostategovt can't have their own Cocoa, Cashew and palm plantations. Why the eastern states governors can not invest in hatchery business and allow Ibadan dictate how many birds or eggs goes to the East when they consume more poultry products.
What exactly is the job of every ministry of Agric in each states?
All the extension offices, what's their job descriptions?
The state vets, what are they doing please?
Are even okay in this nation?
Why do private entities function better than a public enterprise?
@sarnchos
Malaysia today is a net exporter of palm oil products. The oil palm industry accounted for about 35% of the nation's employment. But we are here complaining about the daily drop in crude oil price.
One day soon, this country will shut when the crude ceased to exist.
Ire ó....
