I’m revising psych and reminded psychological factors in depression. When I studied this for the first time, it gave me a framework to consider the impact of one’s view of the world & people interaction on one’s mental health. Sharing to help build self awareness.
1. Life events: death of a spouse, loss of a significant other in one’s life, loss of a job, personal illness or injury, incarceration.
2. High expressed emotion: hostility, critical comments, and over involvement from others (incl parents & partners). Symptoms alleviated when hours spent in contact with these people are reduced.
3. Learned helplessness: a learned belief that one is powerless over their difficulties & that there is nothing they can do to change the situation, resulting in pessimism & apathy.
4. Cognitive theory of depression: negative views of themselves, the world, and the future - usually acquired in early life and may be due to loss of a parent, rejection by peers, or by criticism from teachers or parents.
5. Cognitive distortions: systemic errors in thinking that maintain the belief of depressed individuals in negative concepts. There are four basic types -
A. Arbitrary inference: always drawing the worst conclusions from a situation.
B. Selective abstraction: focusing on the worst aspects of a situation.
C. Over generalization: drawing general conclusions about personal worth from one example.
D. Minimization and magnification: performance is underestimated, errors are overestimated.
I am by no means qualified to give medical advice but gentle reminder not to generalize statements from this thread & use wisely & appropriately.
