There is a crisis in funding for shelters for women in Kenya. Domestic violence is the most pervasive form of violence in this country- according to one DHS at least 49% of all women over 40 in Kenya have been victims of intimate partner violence. That's almost half.
But for women who are economically *and socially* dependent on their husbands, i.e. who will also face stigma and public shaming for leaving their spouses - there are few resources outside their communities to help them leave and transition into a different life.
Not to mention all the young women who are victims of sexual abuse and assault in their own homes. As we saw last week, cases of teenage pregnancies are peaking and the vast majority of these girls are impregnated by their close relatives. We need to fund women's shelters.
