a (hopefully) informative thread about sunmi because everyone should know more about sunmi
Sunmi debuted with the Wonder Girls in 2007, at only 14. She became an idol after her dad grew too sick to work and she needed to make enough $$ to take care of her 2 younger brothers. Her dad passed a few months before her debut. One of her brothers is now her official photog

Fun fact: since leaving JYP she has told JYP to his face that she hated his Tell Me choreo and that he was a fool for rejecting Siren (which she originally wrote for WG when they reformed as a band). And she still got that man promoting her new cb!!
Not many people know Sun Mi was actually her full given name (surname Sun, first name Mi). She adopted her stepdadâs surname Lee later on, but instead of dropping her late fatherâs family name Sun she incorporated it into her first name
this is why her nickname is Miya!

In 2009 the Wonder Girls became the first kpop group to chart on Billboard with âNobodyâ, and began US promotions in earnest - even opening for the Jonas Brothers and shooting a Nickelodeon movie. Sunmi was so miserable she quit the group to go to school
In 2013, 3 years after quitting WG (but staying at JYP), Sunmi made her solo debut with 24 Hours - which not only ate all the other girls up but is probably one of the most covered debut songs in kpop
Sunmi followed up 24 Hours with Full Moon, a sexy vampire concept (!!!) for which JYP told her to perform expressionless because men are stupid, but is and remains a jam
Spotify finally got its act together and linked Sunmiâs Full Moon EP to her official account - this sexy jam (English title: Who Am I) and Burn are my other two faves off it https://open.spotify.com/track/2mCm2BC5rNsX4dCe0IedxS?si=yoARWRB3SK28TQOSa0aPLg
Just when you thought Sunmi couldnât get any hotter or cooler in 2015 the Wonder Girls reformed as a band with her as the bassist, and dropped one of the greatest kpop albums of all time, Reboot, featuring the 80s-inspired title track I Feel You
And I repeat: Sunmi on bass
The Wonder Girls split up once and for all in 2017 due to contract expiration after dropping the (self-penned) iconic track Why So Lonely, and Sunmi signed a solo contract with Makeus, her current company aka the one not promoting her cb for some reason
Does Gashina need introduction?
Since redebuting as a solo artist with Gashina in 2017, Sunmi has been a creative tour de force, taking control of her look, sound, and style from start to finish - plus a few Artist of the Year and SOTY wins/noms under her belt
Sunmi has also become a fashion favorite, appearing in spreads for Louis Vuitton and other brands, attending fashion week in Milan for Prada, and serving as a face of Dior Beauty. Here is an ad she shot for Dior with Cara Delavigne
Oh and did I mention in 2019 Sunmi became the first female kpop solo artist to ever do a world tour? Yeah, that.
One of my favorite things about Sunmi is her global perspective. She cited experiencing and learning from the diversity of her fanbase up close as a highlight of her tour, and has taken it upon herself to study both English and Spanish to better interact with international fans
Sunmi is also a self-proclaimed LGBT Queen (can confirm her LA show was attended by me and the rest of WeHo). Her company shut down critical knetz by saying she wanted to celebrate Pride with her fans and anyone who said boo should âunderstand the meaning of respecting diversityâ
Sunmi puts up with a ton of bs from knetz, from critiques of her body, sexuality, feminism, etc. to doubt about her creative integrity. She is uniquely outspoken for a k-idol in defending not only herself but also speaking up for and championing other women
This thread doesnât even begin to cover why I love Sunmi: sheâs not only one of the most inventive music and visual talents in kpop (critics call her style âsunmipopâ), sheâs also so fucking weird and funny and open and angry and cute and worth stanning
Reason To Love Sunmi #3921948
Sunmiâs last cb Lalalay - which incorporated a traditional Korean instrumental as well as influence from her time in Mexico - mocked the malicious comments she gets from knetz in both the lyrics and choreo

Sunmi champions other female artists like itâs her job, from promoting cbâs, to being a supportive sunbae at music and awards shows, to most recently telling the press she doesnât see coming back at the same time as other female soloists as a competition but a collaboration
Sunmi went around promoting with the Wonder Girls as a Taeyeon ult Sone

While weâre on the subject of iconic moments: Sunmi performed a breakup song at a fanâs wedding and the bride left her own festivities to attend a fansign that same day
GD and TOP complaining that their manager cares more about Sunmi lol
