/Bear with me, a #SanQuentin thread: I appreciate data that is updated in real time. The latest from CDCR shows 1,054 incarcerated people at SQ have COVID-19. This number will likely rise as more tests are completed. Source: https://www.cdcr.ca.gov/covid19/population-status-tracking/
/The population of San Quentin is 3,507, per the weekly population report. The facility was designed for 3,082, so occupancy is at 114%. Source: https://www.cdcr.ca.gov/research/wp-content/uploads/sites/174/2020/06/Tpop1d200624.pdf
/San Quentin is a unique place. I had the profound experience of attending a high school graduation ceremony there several years ago. The urban location in the Bay Area is also unusual. Many CA state prisons are remote/rural/high desert. SQ was built in 1852.
/Today, CDCR said it + CCHCS "are preparing to set up air-conditioned tent structures within San Quentin State Prison & are coordinating logistics to determine the most effective use of additional medical triage & housing space."
/There are currently 60 incarcerated persons receiving medical care at outside health care facilities across the state. Source: https://www.cdcr.ca.gov/covid19/ .
/CDCR's website includes this news: an incarcerated person from Chuckawalla Valley State Prison (CVSP) died June 28 at an outside hospital from what appear to be complications related to COVID-19. https://www.cdcr.ca.gov/covid19/
/Scores of people and organizations are very familiar with San Quentin, including @akhan1437, @thephilmelendez, @jamesking0314, @ellabakercenter, @restore_CAL, @earhustlesq. Follow them! Also https://sanquentinnews.com/
/I hope people realize that this is not just an issue within the walls of the prison. It is impacting our community as a whole: the incarcerated, their families, staff, the outside medical facilities now treating. It is an *enormous* challenge.
/Alameda County Public Health hit pause on reopening today, saying "We are concerned by the increase in local cases, disproportionate impact on communities of color, local impact of the outbreak at San Quentin State Prison" http://www.acphd.org/media/589530/statement-from--achcsa-alco-hits-pause-on-reopening.pdf
/Finally, COVID is in prisons and detention centers across the country. Is there another facility in the U.S known to have more than 1,054 cases? Anyone at @TexasTribune or criminal justice experts like @pamelacolloff heard of any facility that is close to these numbers?
