important to note- the latest term procedure we did at the clinic, 21 weeks, only took around 30ish mins max....like. That's an EXTREMELY short procedure. All the while my patients dozed or held my hand & chatted w me calmly. no more anti choice horror story fear mongering bs

the only horrible part of their abortion experience according to my patients were the dumbass anti choice protestors as they tried to come in the clinic. my patients were always vocal abt how surprisingly fast everything was &how much they felt they were treated w love &respect

normalizing the event w patients, chatting about their life, their favorite foods, their plans for the future & working w them through their experience, their thoughts feelings etc was truly some of the most powerful work Ive ever been a part of.

wanted to post some more bc of diff responses & questions Ive been seeing!! the procedure in the video is for a 12 week abortion, tools for the abortion &the overall procedure are very similar regardless of how many weeks. difference is that higher week abortions will require-

dilation &slightly bigger tools.the concept remains the same though, w/a suction inserted in uterus.suction straw goes up a few sizes according to week stage. all of the ppl I worked w through these procedures always either reported feeling no pain, or heavy period cramps

much later term surgical abortions (fewer than 1% of all abortions) were reported as feeling much more uncomfortable with heavy pressure & much heavier cramps. these used more tools for getting uterus emptied & these abortions took longer (around 30 mins compared to max 7)

where I worked, patients were given calming meds, had a counselor every step of their experience before&after & their comfort was always prioritized before anything else. I know that this is not universal. Stories of negative experiences are 1000000% valid-

&I am sorry that ppls experiences were like that. My tweet is to highlight the fact that so many patients had been given info about abortion being about cutting searing burning etc. Horrible things that simply DO NOT happen. Purposeful false info to create fear.

The abortion procedure itself is not harmful & is not meant to be pain inducing. Anti choice govt regulations/restrictions on meds & treatment, as well as individual provider protocol affect abortion experience. The conversation should center all experiences & work towards-

ensuring that abortion EVERYWHERE is accessible, client centered, is carried out without anti choice restrictions , with safety, love respect and comfort of the patient being #1 always. & ensuring that information is accessible and accurate as well.
