I’ve been hearing a fair amount of references to the “country being torn apart” or “divided.” It’s pretty typical language during times of racial injustice or conflict.

But I want to suggest that the typical language may not be accurate for the moment we’re in.

In the aftermath of the killing of #AhmaudArberry, #BreonnaTaylor and #GeorgeFloyd, there is a great deal of *agreement* rather than conflict. People from all walks of life, universities, corporations, and governments have been pretty univocal in their recognition of problem.

To be sure there are performative elements involved. But there is A LOT of substantive effort and wider spread *seeing* of issues. That feels so substantially different than previous incidents and periods that the language of “torn” and “divided” sounds off to me.

Legislation has been proposed. City councils are addressing policing. Flags and state seals have been changed. International support has poured in. Corporate statements issued. Conversations started and heightened. So much good from so many quarters.

What’s missing is significant numbers of opponents. There are loud minority voices to be sure. But a wide risin tide has turned in the direction of justice and I pray the moment yields lasting righteousness pleasing to God.
