Today, we delivered @MorningBrew’s Q2 “State of the Brewnion.”

The goal?

1) Understand our purpose as a company

2) Understand what we’ve accomplished

3) Understand where we’re going

Here are 11 things I’ve learned along the way to deliver killer quarterly meetings...
1. Don’t miss a quarter. Consistency is key so employees are given a sense of direction frequently. Plus, you don’t bombard people with too much info as a catch-up.

Full disclosure: I missed a quarter and it won’t happen again
2. Use repetition and slide placement to accentuate your most important points. I always want people leaving SOTB w/ clarity around

▫️Our mission

▫️Our values

▫️Where we’re going

So for each of these points I make sure to leverage repetition and serial-position effect
3. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

It’s not a board meeting. You can deliver the wins/losses/goals effectively without being stuffy.

Morning Brew-ize your presentation to really have it sink in.

Here’s a slide from today...
4. Include an Easter Egg.

Whether it’s a big update, a funny photo, or a memorable throwback, use the element of surprise to create anticipation ahead of the meeting.

You’re asking people for 60 minutes of their time.

You better make it exciting.
5. Solicit questions from your team in advance.

Ahead of SOTB we asked employees to submit questions anonymously through a google form.

This allowed employees to make their voices heard in a safe space, while giving Leadership the time to digest questions and prepare answers.
6. Record the meeting.

For us, State of the Brewnion is such an important educational tool for new hires.

Given we put so much time into prepping the address, we might as well squeeze all of the juice out of it.

It is now an invaluable asset for employee onboarding.
7. Over-trust your team.

Don’t hold back on confidential information.

State of the Brewnion is such a valuable & unique opportunity for a startup employee to understand the inner-workings of a growing business.

Don’t deprive your employees of that opportunity.
8. Don’t assume that people have context.

You as a founder (or senior leader) have the widest/clearest aperture of the business.

Your employees do not.

Make sure you give adequate background before elaborating on a goal or a view of the future.
9. Take this super seriously.

This is such a precious opportunity to have an hour of your team’s time.

That is an incredible gift.

Treat it as such.

Put in the time, practice a lot, and don’t fuck it up.
10. Highlight the incredible creativity of your designers by using their work in your slides.

Our State of the Brewnion is a gallery of past work by our design team.

It’s an easy/effective way to celebrate the brand/design org.
11. Finally, and most importantly, shower the team with praise.

- Make sure to be specific so it doesn’t seem disingenuous
- Make sure to spread the love evenly so people don’t feel left out

And there was so much love to give to the entire @MorningBrew org this half.
