Happy #Pride I want to explain something!
I identify as one of the ā€œotherā€ sexualities that people donā€™t know as easily. See, we are mostly comfortable with monosexuality (or being attracted to one gender). Being gay or straight is what makes the most sense to people. Monosexual attraction looks like this:
Polysexuality (attracted to more than one gender) is trickier for people. Most of my following probably understands pansexuality which looks like this:
But the sex spectrum (male-female) is just ONE line that sexuality can fall on. There is also the gender expression (feminine to masculine) spectrum, and some peopleā€™s sexuality falls along the gender spectrum, not the biological spectrum. It looks like this:
I know it seems IMPOSSIBLE to remember those last three but itā€™s easier than you think
Take the word androgyny. A little bit manly, a little bit womanly. From the roots andro (man) and gyn (woman). You can remember which one is which bc gyn comes up a lot (gynecology, misogyny). So androsexual and gynesexual:
You also know the word scoliosis from the root skolio, meaning bent. So skoliosexuals are attracted to people who are gender-bending (gender nonconforming, gender neutral, gender fluid, nonbinary)
Easy peasy! Now you understand polysexuality. Thank you and goodnight.
As one of ā€œthe others,ā€ I know itā€™s harder to remember less common sexualities but I am literally begging you to try. Figuring my own shit out would have been a lot easier if I had the words to do so. And finding a community would be easier if other ppl knew the words too.
One last note about trying to remember what people tell you šŸ˜˜
