Social democracy - understood here as universal healthcare, workers' protections, generous benefits, governance for the common good that fosters civil society and civic behavior - is uniquely equipped to deal with a pandemic.

Despite all the big talk of "innovation" and "risk taking" it turns out America's predatory winners-take-all, tax-heaven monopoly capitalism is uniquely ill-equipped to face a pandemic.

In America we are not "all in this together" - not at all. Quite the contrary in fact. And that is why the virus has defeated us.
