does it seem like there's way more outrage-inducing local news dominating the national news cycle in 2020 than in other years? the gun couple feels like a perfect example
even if my gut were right, i dunno if that is good or bad or what...but it reminds me a bit of what Fox News was so good at (taking isolated local stories and thrusting them into the national spotlight to serve some end) is happening everywhere all the time among all ideologies
again: not always a bad thing! but it feels like it's a big reason why things are so toxic and disorienting online - it's just like a portal to throw small scale skirmishes onto the biggest possible stage - sometimes stripped of context, but sometimes not!
the Karen posting discourse is a good example - it's that Twitter main character thing...except add a layer of disorientation bc that person isn't even on twitter they're just like havin a fit in a Denny's parking lot
this is part of why i feel deep down that connection at scale is mostly hurting us. logging on means being transported, semi-contextless into a sea of conflict & having to bounce each one off your own identity/values/etc. sometimes that's clarifying, but its often just exhausting
