TW CSEM mention

I really don’t believe that RPF shippers are morally equivalent to those who traffic in CSEM, I just worry about what’s going to happen to public discourse about shipping when RPF affects child actors while convos like this are going on:
And sure, this is respectability politics and doesn’t so much effect actual morality or harm reduction, but public opinion might effect future laws. It might effect the AO3’s ability to continue functioning
If the actor that you want to write RPF of has publicly stated that they’re not comfortable with that and don’t want you to do it, then IMO that’s game over. And if a child actor and their team decides to do that it will be a BIG FUCKING DEAL
Spreading the word that shippers are not inherently dangerous has the potential to convince people that it’s not a big deal and not worth prosecuting. I welcome compelling argument for why RPF is not the same as deepfake porn, I just can’t come up with my own
But the main argument here seems to be that, because consent can’t have any grey areas, you have to disregard an actor’s consent or lack thereof when it comes to RPF, and to that I say good luck convincing the courts if it comes down to that https://twitter.com/freetofantasize/status/1277082532547158016
And yeah, complete strangers creating RPF of a child actor is probably not the same on an emotional level as someone the child trusts selling content of them labeled as porn, but we don’t have a legal precedent for that distinction
The safest course of action IMO is to stick to fictional characters and, if those characters are played by live actors, try not to use those actor’s exact likenesses. I know forcing art into legalistic rules is nigh impossible, but you *really don’t* want to be on trial for CSEM
For adult celebrities, I just kinda hope we can foster an environment for them to openly grant or deny consent for RPF, because consent does still matter to me. Acknowledging RPF shouldn’t be some risky PR move that gets read as cringy or harsh or desperate, it should be normal
Opposing sexual abuse means encouraging the creation of systems by which real people can more easily grant or revoke consent for sexual activity or sexual representation. I know celebrities don’t require as urgent protection as marginalized people but I still kinda care abt them
