BREAKING: Frankfurt was already ugly before WWII.

For that we have to thank the pioneer of “rational” and affordable construction - Ernst May.

These housing blocks from 1928 are a typical example.

Below a thread on housing aesthetics of Germany and the Netherlands.
Ernst May built around 12k houses in Frankfurt.

He later went on to develop about 20 Soviet cities, including the city of Magnitogorsk.

One notable detail about his projects was that already back in the day people complained and wrote letters of protest against his designs.
Now let’s check in with the largely underrated aesthetics OGs - the Dutch, to see what they built in the ‘20s-‘40s as affordable housing for the masses.

Oh.

A “‘30s house” became an aspiration and such a popular style that it has only been increasing in value since.
The Dutch houses from that time are built with outstanding attention to detail, quality and ornament (the ad above advertises the as “cheap”!).

Large windows, relatively tall ceilings, wood, beautiful doors, stained glass details, the list goes on...

The definition of Lindy.
They are universally liked - what is there not to like? - and are perfectly suitable for renovation without losing any of the original charm.

Even new projects are built based on that design.

An interesting article in Dutch (if just for the pictures):
